I run Shopify Ads campaigns I never try to win
Hey,
I run Shopify Ads campaigns I never try to win.
Broad keywords, a small daily budget, bids set low enough that I lose almost every auction. No clicks to speak of, no installs. Every auction entry, even the ones I lose, hands back the actual search term that triggered it. That’s what I’m running the campaign for.
Run that for a couple weeks across five or ten broad terms in the category, and you end up with a real record of what merchants type when they’re looking for something like this app, not what a founder assumes they type.
That gap is bigger than most founders think. You’d write “fraud protection” in your listing because that’s the term you use internally. A merchant with the same problem might search “stop chargebacks,” or something narrower tied to their own setup. None of that shows up in a brainstorm. A brainstorm can only produce words that are already in your head.
The rewrite that comes after is where this pays off. Title, tagline, description, feature bullets, all rebuilt around words merchants actually used instead of words you assumed they’d use.
The ad itself doesn’t touch your organic ranking. Losing an auction doesn’t hurt it, and winning one wouldn’t have helped it either. The only thing that moves your organic rank is what happens after, when a keyword you rewrote around actually converts: a merchant searches it, lands on your listing, installs. That’s a real signal. The ad spend that surfaced the word for you isn’t.
The campaign’s job stops at the data. Turning it into a rewrite that converts is a separate job, and it’s the one that actually moves your rank.
I wrote up the full method, budget ranges, how long to run it, how to read the search term report without chasing noise, on the blog. If you’re about to touch your listing copy, it’s worth reading before you write a new headline.
