What Ants Taught Me About Startup Growth
When I was a little kid, I was fascinated with ants.
I stared at them for hours.
I would follow up on a single colony for week.s
I read books about them (highly recommend Bernard Werber’s books. Truly innovative)
Do you know how to find a colony?
You tap an ant.
It panics and runs home.
Back to where it’s safest.
People are the same.
That’s why we shout ‘Mommy!’ when we’re scared.
Photo by Prabir Kashyap on Unsplash I had an audit last week with this techie founder.
He was lost— Couldn’t figure out how to gain more users
So what does he do?
Build another feature.
That’s his safe space.
Instead, he should pick up the phone (or LI DMs) and get clients the old-fashioned way, getting them talking about his product.
It doesn’t matter if your app has 12 or 13 features if nobody’s using it.
Ship first. Iterate later.

PS: I’m creating a private, invite-only Whatsapp group to share tips and ideas on scaling Shopify apps. The idea is to have a community where select people can network and scale together. If this interests you, reply to this email with ‘Shopify’.
